赤脚医生，是一个曾经让人感到亲切、温暖和慰藉的名词。20多年前，它获得了一个新称谓：乡村医生。不过，现在很多人还是愿意把这个群体称为赤脚医生。看上去，这很有些怀旧的色彩，但肯定不仅仅是为着怀旧。
　　在新中国的卫生史上，赤脚医生作出过不可磨灭的历史性贡献。有着不短农村生活经历的人，对身体病痛的记忆，往往与对赤脚医生的记忆相连。但显然，赤脚医生的价值，不仅扎根于个人记忆的深处，更体现在其所表征的时代风气，以及绵延至今仍惠及民众的历史功绩。有一定历史经验的人都不会否认，赤脚医生制度的普遍建立，意味着对人口占大多数的农民生命健康的强烈关注，意味着医疗资源向人口占大多数的农民的有力倾斜。
　　但时代的演进与共同经历的缺乏，往往容易使人隔膜，既隔膜于历史，也隔膜于现实。因此，如果有人认为赤脚医生只是一个历史性存在，甚至努力使之成为一个历史性存在，一点也不奇怪。我也相信，赤脚医生必将退出历史舞台，但不是现在。换言之，在历史使命完结之前，赤脚医生仍将以其广泛乃至不断增进的价值，顽强地呈现出自身的当代性。
　　赤脚医生的当代性，不是意志的结果，正如否认其当代性是意志不可能完成的任务。
　　在微观层面，赤脚医生的当代性来源于其内生的价值，而民族性、认同性、便捷性、廉价性又是其价值的主要源泉。农民居住分散和农村熟人社会的特征，农民对中医中药的认同，是赤脚医生存在的社会基础;而赤脚医生永远在民间的状态及低成本运作方式，能快捷而有效地满足农民群众的一般医疗需求。没有赤脚医生这一群体发挥作用，小病不出村(乡)的目标就难以实现，而这种压力无疑将向上传导并聚集。
